Letterpress Futurist Typography weekend. Read more.
Until Filippo Tommaso Marinetti wrote the Italian Futurist manifesto in 1909, typography was a distant relative to the arts. The Futurists broke the rules of traditional typography within the printed page to convey the artistic force of words. This was basically a new mode of communication and typographic experiment—the creations of poets and artists.
The weekend course will focus on this ethos of working with movable wood & metal type to appreciate the enjoyment of ‘breaking the rules’. The course is for all levels, whether a seasoned letterpress practitioner or new to the process. Students will gain a greater typographic understanding and leave with a number of printed works.
This course is for anyone wanting to learn about the process of letterpress printmaking and its relationship with Typography, the importance of the Letterpress process as a typographical learning tool is often overlooked. For the absolute beginner or the advanced typographer all should find this course very interesting. Completing the course will lead to enhanced letterpress and typographical knowledge; work for portfolio presentation; learning of a process that is becoming increasingly popular; and understanding of type as a basis for communication.
The course runs from 10am–4pm on Saturday and Sunday, and costs £180. Basic materials are included, but extra materials can be purchased from our on-site shop.
