This course covers preparing positives both by hand and digitally, making the photostencil, and producing a multicoloured multilayered print or series of experimental prints to demonstrate the versatility of this fantastic process. It will also introduce you the the workshop and its facilities in a very practical and enjoyable way.
Suitable for a beginner who wants to gain an understanding of the screenprinting process and what it has to offer, but also a seasoned pro who is a bit rusty and would like a refresher.

An exciting introduction to screenprinting's wonderful artistic possibilities. Read more.

Tuesday evenings — 8th May-26th June— 18:30–21:30
This course is suitable for beginners and the more experienced who want to brush up on their skills, as well as those who want to use the workshop on an open access basis afterwards.
Individuals are encouraged to explore their own ideas for creating images, making use of various approaches available such as paper stencil, digital print-outs, cut black paper and hand drawn stencils. It is possible to work with photographic imagery, hard edged graphic designs, painted marks, drawn marks, scanned drawings, and more.
The tutor advises on methods most suitable for individual work. During the course the experience gained will lead students to gradually explore their own preferred methods for creating images in screenprinting.
Students are clearly guided step-by-step in how to use the facilities in the workshop at the Ink Spot Press. The majority of studio time is spent preparing stencils and working hands-on creating prints with specialist equipment. During the course it will be possible to create a number of different printed images.
- The tutor will tailor learning opportunities to each individuals interests within this diverse printmaking area.
- Understanding how to produce colourful interesting images from your own designs
- Experience of many different, exciting stencil making techniques such as paper stencil, photographic stencils and hand drawn stencils.
- An understanding of which stencil making techniques are suitable for different effects/textures/images
- Confidence in setting up the screen, using the squeegee and hands-on experience of the studio’s screen printing equipment, exposure unit and washout unit.
- Learning about the possibilities available through colour mixing, use of transparency and the overlaying of transparent or opaque layers of colour
- Knowing how to register colour layers using a clear polyester sheet and creating a map/key image for this purpose.
